Can a rim joist be larger than the joists?
Per subject. Can I have 2x8 rim joists, and 2x6 joists within?
if I built a deck using 2x6 joists, and obviously used (at a minimum) spacing for joists and beams per IRC... I can build a compliant deck
However, when I read DCA6, it says for deck railing posts they need to attach to minimum 2x8 rim joists
So question... can I use 2x8 rim joists to enable railing, but the joists themselves within the deck structure are only 2x6?
I have multiple constraints (in another thread) that are leading me to either flush beam construction where I can use 2x10 , or if I go dropped beam it'll likely be 2x6 for beams and joists

I should add, I know preference for majority is 2x6 isn't good for a freestanding deck, and 2x8 minimum... but please put that aside for now. This is whether this would meet the code.
I will have added piers, cross bracing, and all the good stuff to make sure this thing doesnt wobble (and it's <18" off the ground)

thank you, yes, that is note that got me thinking. It is permitted to have the rim joist (2x8) and the joists (2x6) attached to it be different heights? (or at least, it isn't excluded)
