I'm currently expanding the deck at my parents. The end of the expansion is going to be a 4 season room (14x14). 2x10 joists, sitting on a triple 2x12 beam, 12 feet away, with 1.5' overhang over the beam. Originally, we were going to have a simple sloped roof attached to the house, with the load bearing wall sitting on the overhang (yes I consulted a structural guy and he said this would be ok). Now my parents think they want to spin the roof 90 deg, and do a gable roof. I don't think this can work, because then you'll basically need 2 more 'beams', 1 under each wall, correct? Basically the joists that the walls sit on would have to be beams. There is no beam config that I know of that can handle 12', so now we're talking another post under each 'beam' to get the span down to 6', and use a double 2x10 under each wall. The thought of adding 2 more footings turns me off. Am I correct in this assessment?

I built a deck 3-4 yrs ago out of PT pine, stained with CWF after the wood dried for about 4-5 months. The deck is in the sun all morning. Last yr it turned black with mildew :eek: so I cleaned it with bleach and restained it adding M-1 mildewcide to the stain. Over the winter the deck turned black so I cleaned it last week and now it's on it's way to turning black again. Any ideas as to why and how to prevent/slow down the mildew? I've cleaned/stained many decks over the years but never had this issue. Even decks further south with dew that didn't burn off until midday weren't this bad.
