Repainting Deck Railing

My deck railing is 30 years old, clear cedar and stained at least 5 times. Over the years cracks (bottom rail) have appeared in the paint. The top rail has cracks in the wood which I've sanded and put one coat of stain. I'm using a solid stain, what is a quick or easy way to remedy the problem? I know the best way but can't spend the time. Thanks in advance.

I think it looks good, especially for it's age. While there are various fillers that could be used to fill the cracks, when they fail [and they will] it will look worse.

Scrub it clean and restain. If it cracks, it cracks. I wouldn't worry about it - I've seen much newer decks not look that good.

Thanks for your quick response. marksr, agree about fillers....stickshift, your right, I'm always looking for perfection!! Should I just re-stain or use a primer? If a primer, any recommendations?

I see no reason to use a primer. As long as the old stain is relatively clean and chalk free, the stain should adhere well.
