I'm planning on building a free standing deck in my back yard. I live in Mansfield, OH and wonder if building codes require me to submit plans and pay a fee?

Cool

I was given a good piece of advice on permits :

If you build a deck without a permit and something gives , your insurance may not cover injuries or rebuilding if it is not to code !

Permits are not required in all locations. My locality does not require them.

You will need to find out on your own if your locality does require them, and what the additional requirements may entail.

That's my best advice.

Unless one of the bldg. officials or inspectors from Mansfield happens to reply, the ONLY sure way to know if a permit is required is for you to go ask them. zalyx1 makes an excellent point about insurance companies not honoring claims when things like this are done without permits when they are required. Finding out you are on the hook for a million dollar damage claim just because you decided a $100 permit was too much trouble might tend to ruin your whole week.
