Filling a gap for gate screws

Hi,
Looking for any suggestions for this problem. Planning to install a fence post to add a gate to my deck. Underneath the deck, there is a gap (app 1/4" - 3/8)" between a joist and the stair stringer where some of the lag screws from the post base will hit. Any ideas how to fill this gap with something that will hold the screws? I could move the post over a bit to hit the joist, but the post will not line up properly with the stair rails - not the end of the world, but wouldn't look as good. Attaching a picture in hopes of making this clearer. Thanks!

I would probably get some 1/2x4 bolts, nuts, and washers and try to draw the two tightly together.
