I am running a section of deck railing from one post to the house and am unsure of the proper way to attach it to the house. I would like to avoive putting another 4x4 post next to the house, but I coule secure a 2x4 to the house and use it to connect the railing. Would this work, or would it be better to attach the railing directly to the siding and into the wall studs? THanks

The studs in the house usually don't happen to be just where you need them to be. What I usually do is plan on a 4X4 post about a foot from the wall and simply cantalever the railing past the post to the siding of the house, or start with the 4X4 right next to the siding and run the rail from there. I don't rely on the house siding for any strength in my railing, and I don't poke unnecessary holes in the siding. That leads to leaks.
