Old deck stain

I've got an older deck with a semi transparent stain that's old and half the deck isn't coated anymore from not maintaining it. I couldn't remove it.all from using stripper and was wondering if I need to sand it off to bare wood when I apply my dark walnut semi transparent stain or is just doing a light sanding good enough?

I'm a newbie at this

Welcome to the forums!
How does the old stain color compare to the new? If the color is close it may not be real noticeable, hard to say without seeing just what you have. https://www.doityourself.com/forum/e...-pictures.html

If your are staining the same color then you dont have to remove as much but getting the wood to a clean state is always best!

Going darker will help some. It wouldn't hurt to give it a once over with 80 grit sandpaper.

I'm no expert, but I would sand it down pretty good so the stain has new pores to absorb into (even a little is better than nothing). I just stained mine two weeks ago with a solid color stain, and even though there was no stain on it beforehand, I'm convinced the sanding helped the new stain absorb. I used 80 grit and an orbital sander. It was a huge PITA but I think my stain will last longer because of the better prep.
