Adding roof to deck

Hello. Id like to add a roof to our deck. It would be attached to the house and go out over the railings. The current posts are 6x6s and Id like to continue that up to support the joists. What is the best way to connect the existing 6x6s to the new ones for this roof?

thank you.

Replace the posts so that they are continuous. Be sure you get a permit or you will regret it later.

Thank you for the reply. So there’s no other way to add a roof? Removing the existing posts is pretty extensive and expensive. So much so I may just forget the whole thing.

The problem is that scabbing onto your existing creates a weak point at the joint. You can either go to the trouble of scarfing which is difficult and labor intensive or reinforcing the joint but that's pretty ugly. Replacing with a 6x6 of the needed length is strongest and looks best.
