I’m looking to build a small deck (9’7” x 8’). It is positioned on an inside corner of our house. As such, Im looking to have a double ledger board with one footing placed near the un-supported corner, which our code officer has told me would be ok.
The footing would support a beam that would run UNDER the floor joists and HANG from one of the ledger boards against the house. Both the beam and the ledger are constructed from 2x8”s. I found a Simpson Strong-Tie HU Galvanized Face-Mount Joist Hanger for 4x16 Nominal Lumber, which would fit, but seeing as I’m not using it quite as intended (to face mount a joist to a ledger), I’m not sure it would be to code.
Does anyone know if this would be adequate or have another solution? Thanks in advance!
Hanging beams from ledgers is typically not allowed, at least not without an engineered drawing. Ledgers are not designed to take the loads that beams handle, even if they are doubled. You should look into a beam pocket in the wall under the ledger.
But if your inspector is okay with it, no point in arguing. It's probably not big enough to worry about.
I have a deck which is 36 feet long. It has piers every 6 feet, therefore the joist span is 6 feet. How do I sister the 2x10 together. I am going to use 12-foot length boards. What do you suggest: Nails, Lag screws, or bolts. What size how far apart? How far from the top and bottom edges and ends? If you suggest lag bolts what size pilot holes?Read More
Hi All!
I'm a amateur interior DIYer who has a remodeled 5 rooms in my house (to the studs, wiring, insulation, carpentry, drywall & mud, sand & paint, trim, etc)
This year I'm going to attempt my first exterior project: a deck extension in my back yard. I would love to get some suggestions and advice from seasoned pros like yourselves. I'm specifically looking for design ideas and also any points to keep in mind as a first time deck builder. For example, what are common mistakes amateurs make so I can avoid them myself.
Here are 3 pics of the current deck.

My initial idea was to do a tiered extension and I've drawn up some rough plans. I want to remove the existing floor boards on the top level and have everything be TREX. I'm not sure what to do for railings.

Any feedback would be much appreciated!
