Deck renovation

I have a 14x18 attached, green treated deck that was installed 5 years ago. One of the top rails had warped pretty bad which lead me to take it off. It had also permanently bowed out a few of the 4x4 posts so here I am redoing all rails/posts. I will be changing the notched posts from outside of the rim joist to inside because that'll be more solid and I personally think it looks better. My question is with the stairs. I know there is a 36" stair width requirement. I'd like to move my posts here ro the inside as well bur that may be less than 36". Is the requirement the overall width of the tread? Is it from inside of post to inside of post? How does the handrail affect this? Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks!

Interesting. Thank you! I was always under the impression it basically had to be 36" at the lowest width including treads, posts, railing, etc. This makes my day! Thank you!

 

This brings to my next question. How difficult is it to widen my stairs? If I will be moving my 4x4 posts to the inside of my rim joists, I will be given an additional 8" between where the nearest stranger and the joist meet on that side. Is it as simple as removing all the treads/risers, attaching another stringer and leveling? Hopefully the picture can provide some additional detail.
