New deck

I have a 2 car garage in Flagler Beach, Fl that has roof access from the house. The roof looks like it is a standard roof covering. I would like to cover this roof with 2x4 on their side and then a wood surface 1/2 inch x 4 inch x8 ft boards of some kind that will become the new walking surface so that I can walk on the roof without danger of breaking the waterprove seal... How does this sound.?

Poppie, I think my first stop would be to the local city/county building permit office to see what would even be allowed in that type of location. First thing that comes to mind in our Sunshine State would be security from high winds.

New deck

I din't think of that because I will be screwing the whole deck together which will give the effect of the deck being one piece. The deck will wind up at least 20x20 which I beleive will be quite heavy, what do you think.?

What do I think? I think you would be smart to check with your local bldg. dept. BEFORE you proceed.

Ditto. I think that chances of getting such a structure approved that's not attached TO the building is probably zero. Hurricane force winds are capable of removing an entire roof from a building
and would probably toss your deck project like Lincoln Logs.
All if not necessarily lost, however. Will just have to come up with a method of anchoring that retains the watertight integrity of the roof.

Talking Fine Homebuilding

If you can get the zoning board to approve your project, you may want to order a copy of Fine Homebuilding from Feb/Mar 2001. There's an entire article about building decks above existing rooms and the waterproofing considerations.

Here's a link to the page you'll need to order a new copy for $5. http://www.taunton.com/store/pages/fh_toc_137.asp

Good luck!
