Angry deck stairs

This web sight is awesome, cannot believe you guys respond as soon as you do. Im building a landing (trex) 5x12 then 6 steps down on to patio. Can my stringers be touching the ground,or do i need a concrete footing. Thank You!

It depends on what you are using for your stringers. ANY wood in direct contact with dirt is gonna rot. Some just do it faster than others. The decks I build have the stringers sitting on a concrete landing. Not only do they last longer, but they are more stable. The butt end of a 2X12 sitting directly on dirt isn't much surface area. A 6" thick concrete pad, about 20" to 24" wide and 3' or 4' long isn't gonna go too far!
