Ledger boards

1. I'm in the process of designing a deck for our house. We bought the house new but the builder has already installed the ledger board across the back of the house at the same level as the interior floor joists. I would prefer to have the deck start at a lower level since the backyard slopes away from the house, that way it won't be six feet above ground at the other end. Is there any problem / disadvantages to attaching the ledger into the foundation wall with lag bolts??

2. Does anyone know where I can find span info for Alberta? Just wondering about joist size and spacing.

Question #1 -- A couple of ways you might go. Simpson, and others, make anchor systems that would allow you to attach the ledger to the stem wall of the foundation. Another option would be to make the deck free-standing.

Question #2 -- Your local bldg. dept.
