Actual sizes of joists

I am in the process of changing my deck boards and was underneath my deck (ranging 4' to 6' off the ground) taking some measurements and discovered that while some of the 2x8 joists actually measure 1.5"x7.5" (as I would have expected), many were actually 1.5"X 7" (or just over 7"). Does this make sense? Is it common for the 2x8 to vary in width so much?

Cool

Yes, due to shrinkage.
Wood is constantly swelling and contracting due to moisture content.
Exposed wood, such as in a deck, much more so than lumber built into the interior part of a house.
