oil based vs water based stains

Is there really a difference between oil based and water based stains? Besides clean-up? Does one last longer then the other, especially green treated? I hate using oil based anything because of the clean up. I just throw away the brush and the roller when I am done. I am trying to get my front porch stained (its been a year) and didnt realize that there is so many choices in everything. Come on guys, my husband really doesnt know much about it. And since i will be the one to stain it, i dont want to do it every year (or every other). Thanx, Tina

Hi Tina,

Well, water base stains aren't worth squat. Neither are any clear sealers.
Get a good oil-base stain with some color (cedar, redwood, etc,),
and one which is water repellent and has UV protection(Cabots, Sikkens, or Wolmans F&P). These thee are the top rated by Consumer Report. The uv protection is in the color oxide pigments.

And it doesn't take expensive rollers or brushes, so clean-up is a mute point. Three dollar brushes - use and toss.

PS - your porch should be cleaned/pw prior to staining.
