2 questions

I have a 4 bedroom 2-story house. So far, I have replaced the carpetting with HW flooring in 3 of the bedrooms. I have started to re-do the 4th bedroom and was considering just replacing the carpet in the bedroom and hall and steps. Am I breaking any decorating rules by not installing HW floor in the 4th bedroom?

Also, this 4th bedroom is not currently used, more like an extra bedroom. I would like to set it up as an office. I was thinking about intalling a chair rail and painting a darker color below the rail and lighter above. Does this present a problem if the room was to be used as a bedroom in the future (if I sell the house)?

Also, any neat (simple) ideas for colors?

Hi!

no problem whatsoever with (A) having a different flooring in that one bedroom (especially since it will be wood - which is basically a neutral - and not just another color of carpet) or (B) installing a chair rail. Chair rails can be used in any room of the house, be it an office or bedroom or dining room. and painting a darker color below with a lighter color above is the best choice for keeping the room from being dark and top-heavy.

as for color choices............that all depends on personal taste & the look you're wanting to achieve. for a masculine "man's office", you would use darker, richer colors (burgundy, hunter green, deep plum, navy, khaki, gray, etc), or for a woman's office, you might want lighter, cheerier colors (buttery yellow, sagey green, periwinkle blue, rose, white, cream, etc). plus, you might want the room to reflect the colors & style of the rest of the house, and there might be something in the room you'll need to work around.......there are just too many options to be able to suggest anything to you without having more information.

but as far as the wood floor & chair rail goes, you've got my blessing!

Suspense???

My bedroom is like a 'Sage' color, the pallette color is called 'Pale Umber' if that helps. In order to tie the rooms together, I am using the Sage color below the chair rail (stained to match trim) and a lighter green color above the chair rail. I am then going to use the lighter color in the hallway and stairwell.

It should tie all 4 bedrooms together fairly well as each of my boys room's have dark green accents in their bedrooms.

I anticipate replacing the carpeting with a berber with some green flecks to draw the colors together from hall to bedroom.

Does that make sense.

If you can't tell, it's a masculine house!

At first

I was a fraid to paint my bedroom the sage color, but it is rather large with 2 nice big windows w/ HW floor, so it did not make the room seem too small.

If the sage combo make this room (12x12) appear to small, I may sponge on ragroll a lighter color over the sage, but we shall see!
