Talking Will my marriage survive (Hardwood & cabinet selection)

Riddle me this, is there anything wrong with using a dark toned, brazilian cherry floor and going with light-maple cabinets? I love it, but my wife says the contrast in woods offends every fiber of her being
The countertop will be a mottled, black granite. Our trim will be a creamy, craft white. I know that everyone has different tastes, just wondering if there was anything *fundamentally* wrong with my choice in cabinet and flooring color.

There is nothing fundamentally wrong with anyone's preferences in decor. Different people have different tastes. Brazilian Cherry is a beautiful and durable wood. It is very photo-sensitive and will turn deep red after exposure to light. Paired with light maple cabinets, the contrast may be too stark for some tastes. While contrast tends to be better than a poor match, too much contrast may unsettle some, especially if there are no underlying tones to complement each other. If you prefer the exotic rain forest species, perhaps Cumaru, which tends to be more compatible with the tones of light maple and offers a rich, warm, honey brown contrast to light maple might be a better choice.

Talk about contrast, her choice is white cabinets! Now white and brazilian cherry is really a stark difference. The wifey justs doesn't think that WOODS should be contrasted as much. I think she'll change her mind when she sees it come together. The only other problem is that she wants a cabin red for the 2 of the kitchen walls. We are worried that the red and the brazilian cherry may be a problem. Whatchya think?

As indicated, each person tends to have individualized tastes and preferences. Mixing red tones can be challenging. The best way would be to lean a sample door up against a wall and place the flooring sample in front to study the contrast. Also, get a sample of the paint and paint a couple coats on a piece of cardboard and place beside flooring and cabinets to get a better idea how it will all look together.

Actually white cabinets on a Brazilian cherry floor is very eye catching. Two completely different clearcoated woods can look like you went to a building supply clearance sale. With the money tied up in the floor and cabinets, you may not want that look. Black granite looks awesome on top of white cabinets.
But what do I know? My cabinets are 1943 corral pink. But really, I see alot of black granite on white cabinets in many of the custom homes in which I iinstall flooring.

my vote....

i'd prefer the white cabinets over the light maple. that really light wood says "contemporary" to me and has the possibility of becoming dated, whereas white is just timeless & classic, and could be any style.

also, the white would be stunning with the red walls & black counters, and your flooring would really be special since it'd be THE wood. the light maple cabinets would be just sort of "there" with the red & the counters, and would probably fight with the floor.

so, i guess that makes you wrong & her right. HA! --just kidding! (actually, it wouldn't hurt your marriage to state that out loud in front of her!!! )
