Paint for pre-teen girls' room

I am getting ready to redo my girls' bedroom and want to paint the room a combination of each of their favorite colors. One likes red and the other likes purple. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could use shades of these two colors on the walls? (vertical stripes, horizontal stripes, etc . . .)

 

red & purple are both VERY strong colors. using them BOTH on the walls will be pretty wild and/or gawdy, if not psychodelic! instead, i'd find some bedding with both colors in it (like a purple print with red ladybugs, or a plaid or polka dot, etc - whatever) and then choose one of the colors for the bottom part of the wall (underneath a chair rail or border) and keep the upper part of the wall something neutral. then use the red & purple in the accessories, like draperies & lamps/shades & rugs, etc.

but, IMO, i wouldn't use either the red or the purple on the full walls. it would just be too much. keep it cute & cheery.
