to border or not to border

I have a small and narrow kitchen with dark wood floors and dark cabinets. I'd like to add some visusal interest and was thinking about stenciling a border on the lower 1/3 of the walls. I was wondering if this would make the room look smaller? I'm painting the walls a soft golden yellow color and I'm planning a color scheme of yellow & white with bits of red and olive green accents.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,

well, it certainly won't make it look bigger! but i don't think it will really make it look any smaller than it already does - the dark flooring & dark cabinets are taking care of that on their own. if you really want to make it look bigger, paint the cabinets white. but if that's too big a project, you might as well do as much as you can with existing space & add the spot of interest.
