2story family room design decorating dilema

Help with decorating design 2 story family room. sized 23ft wide by 14 ft long.
fireplace in middle of back wall(enter house through front door, fireplace first thing you see) on "north" wall there is a 2ft window on either side of fireplace. "south" wall is openentryway--no wall.

to the right there is a doorway to dining room (north) and same wall south there is a doorway to kitchen.

on the left that wall is 14 ft with out obstruction.

fireplace focal wall painted darker than lavendar.to top of fireplace (2story) w/w carpeting is light grey muted with soft black (beautiful actually) but i had preffered more terra cotta warmer colors so this is challenge to me.

2 modern reclining chairs(purple like walls) currently on either side of fireplace now...we would like to go more traditional...what color sofa and double recliner maybe ..go with purple and grey...looking to leather, but black isnt our first choice. and we will be keeping these colors for a while as is.

so, also where to place furniture in this room? we would like a large entertainment center wooden with pewter accents maybe..currently there is a black one in the room. would a wooden one clash with rug? amd wher to put it all design wise?

in the foyer before get to this room there is a wall currently pewter sofa table with lg. flower arrangement..incorporate this into room...I need help please!!
i love our new home purchase but am chllenged design wise.
sellers are moving and selling there furniture, black leather..it is beautiful but black isnt our first choice. I know you guys (annette?) can come up with a color scheme for me..thanks theresa

instead of just trying to come up with a color that "goes with" lavender and gray, find either an area rug or a floral arrangement or some artwork or fabric for draperies or a throw pillow - anything - that has multiple colors in it that you like and pull your colors FROM that. if i were to just say "sage green", for example, you'd think i was nuts. but if you were to find an area rug that had a fabulous design on it and was multi-colored (lavender, plum, gray, black, sage green, whatever), then you'd understand how the sage green could look good with what you have.

if you don't want black, then off the top of my head, the only other generic colors i can think of would be a much deeper lavender color, which would be plum (eggplant) or a darker-than-the-carpet charcoal gray. i suppose white would work, with colored throw pillows. but if it were me, i'd look for some multi-colored accessory that i could draw inspiration from. walk through a fabric store for ideas. or look at bedding ensembles for interesting color combinations. the people who design fabrics have done all the work for you - just steal their ideas & use them in your own way.

and with colors like gray & purple, i can't see your room going very far in the direction of traditional. those colors just say "contemporary" to me, so your decorating might be more difficult from the get go.

i'd stay away from brown woods. dark cherry colors will be prettiest with the purple & gray tones.
