another color help

Here is my dilemma. We have a large basement room - a chunky L shape. The short part of the L is my office - I run a business from the house, and the longer is a regular family room. This is a very dark basement - almost no sunshine at all. Right now, we have a few table lamps, but I am replacing the florescent overheads with a track lighting system. One wall is a cheap medium oak panel, and we have 11 feet of medium oak cabinents on one side, and a small bar - medium oak in the opposite corner.

We are going to rip up the carpet, and paint the walls and finish the floor. Any suggestions? Everything going back into the room will be new or paintable. Hubby doesn't want the oak painted, and I want the room to be bright and inspiring. Right now, there is a creamy light brown on the walls, but it is very blah,

Basement queen - who lives all day in the dungeon.
