Making a room more cosy
Hi,
I have this big room which I want to make cozier. The room is used during lunch hour as well as for pub activities during the nights. In both cases there are between 80-150 people there. We did some major renovating last summer and we don’t have a lot of money left, so I need your best tips how to make this room a more welcoming place to go to without spending a fortune!
What I can and can’t do:
- The tables and benches will have to stay since it’ll cost too much to buy new nicer ones.
- I would like to have some sofas in the room (they do need to be able to withstand a lot though), but the hideous one shown in one of the pictures below will not stay there for long. Bye bye you ugly thing… (the tires should not be where they are either…)
- Behind the bar there should be some menus hanging on the wall.
- I can paint the walls however I want, but not the floor or the ceiling.
-
So, my idea is, since I have to keep the ugly tables, to integrate the tables and the benches more into the room. What about bringing more nature into the room? By doing that the wooded tables wouldn’t look so weird (they would fit in so to say).
I study mechanical engineering and so do all the other people who will be using this place. I would therefore not mind to bring cogwheels and stuff in there. As art I mean (see http://wwwdelivery.superstock.com/WI...1612R-7527.jpg )…
What would you do?
And as I said: I do have a limited budget (about 1000-2000 dollars or so).
Thank you for your help!
Layout of the room ("Fönster" = windows, "Mikros" = Microwaves):

Hi Posselosse, welcome to DIY
The cozy look comes when you eliminate the "institutional look"
Walls--> I'd use a rustic stucco / faux effect instead of simply paint them. Certainly you can DIY
Furniture--> use wicker armchairs with cushions, instead of old style armchairs. Paint the metalic legs (tables / benches) in a color fitting the stucco
Windows--> use the same fabric you used for the cushions to create valances for the windows
Microwaves--> eliminate the current shelves and try to create a more basic system using wood shelves and bricks or blocks
Layout--> try to create smaller interior spaces or corners using plants
I hope this helps
