How to break paint colors on room to hall wall.

Complete newbie to decorating and painting here. Thankfully a good friend's wife is guiding me through making my Great Room less of a "Man Cave" and more friendly to all that visit...
My question is that I want to re-paint (or shall I say get a professional to re-paint) my newly re-decorated room but the back wall of the room continues all the way down the entry hall. I don't want to end up painting the whole hallway. Even if I did paint the hallway, I would want to use a different color than I would paint my Great Room. The other 3 walls of the room are easy since they have a well defined "break point" for color. What can I do with the back wall? There is a door opening that I could stop the color at but the portion of the wall above the door (about a foot or so) is continuous. Can I just get them to cut a clean line for that foot or so above the doorway. Or is it acceptable to just paint the 3 walls of the room and leave the back wall the old color? Is an "Accent wall" an option? (I seem to remember someone telling me that Accent walls are kind of passe.......).
I'm open to all ideas and help.

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

I've changed colors at a door frame before but IMO that just isn't a good idea. It looks better when the whole wall is the same color. The wall in question can be painted the new color, left to match the hall color or painted a totally different color. Without being there to look at the current colors, furnishings and how the room and hall are laid out - it would be hard to say what would look best.

Pics might help us to advise you better, http://forum.doityourself.com/electr...your-post.html

I'll go ahead and move your thread to the decorating and design section of the forums - I think you'll be better served there

Thanks for the help Marksr and thanks for moving this to a more appropriate area. I'm (well we) are still finishing up the new furniture and everything that goes with it. When I get that done I will take some pics and post them up so you guys can get a better idea of what I am up against.

Thanks

Okay,
Here come the photos.....
Let me know what you think.

I'll start out with a "before" photo so you can see just how far it has come......yeah, it was pretty bad.....

Now from the same place in the room but "after"..

Now for the "problem" wall.......the wall continues past the door on the left, down the hallway all the way to the front door of the house.

Little closer view of the problem wall...

The other wall in the room....

Front wall with the new big TV (I love the new TV! )

So there you have it. I know I still need a couple more things to finish it up (some more things for the Accent table at the back and maybe a couple more wall hangings or pictures) but that is pretty much it. I'm open to ideas on paint colors and a possible solution to that annoying wall. If I've got any huge decorating "faux puas" (sp?) that jump out at you, let me know. I'm a rookie at this..... Oh yeah, I know I will need some curtains (or would they be drapes....?) I'll work on those also.

Thanks again,
Scott

Hi Scott,

It looks really nice and yes, you need curtains ASAP

Regarding the wall - problem, I think that a wall - focal point would be a good solution. I'd use a faux finish, and after this, you can choose if you hang the picture or not
I'd include the entrance portion of the wall--> the different shapes and heights of the wall will point the different spaces

About the color: I'd settle with earth colors and shades, as in the image below, but if you wish to make a real difference, you can work with hues between tan and green --> check green colors between RGB 101-116-97 and RGB 130 - 114 -65
(RGB are Red - Green - Blue Color compositions)

Thank you PMGCA. I did not think about a faux finish. Good idea.
You are saying to include the entrance and then stop the new color on the other side of the door? (the wall continues up past the room entrance into the hallway) I did not think about trying that.
I will also look at the different colors you are talking about. Please forgive this newbie question, but where can I get samples of colors in the range you spoke?

Thanks,
Scott

Hi Scott,

Glad to know I helped!

Yes, I meant all the wall

You can use this website to find the colors using the numbers I pprovided and in addition you can search the color for different paint brands

Nice room! Well done.
Another option for paint color transition would be to define the entrance to the hall.
If your good with miter cuts....I can see a wide molding all around including the the door in the hall.I would bring the far side molding of door to ceiling height on both sides...another fitting between at the top and the perhaps something nice hung in the frame. Then edge the far corner and the top of the hall entry.
IMHO...this would contain the "eye" within the room rather than have it wander down the hall. Just depends what ya like eh?

Thanks Whitefeather!
That is another good idea. I might take a look at trying that. I see what you are talking about with containing the eye in the room.

Scott.
