Question removing wall tile

I have the 70s tile in my bathroom around the entire bathroom half way up the wall. I want to remove the tile to update the bathroom. By the way, the walls are plaster. After removing a few tile I noticed 'browncoat' (I think that is what it is called) underneath. And it is not flush with the wall above the tile... it sticks out maybe 3/8 inch. What should I do? Can I remove the browncoat and drywall down to the floor, without touching the plaster wall above? Or should I smear drywall combound over the browncoat and drywall to the ceiling over the plaster? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'd try a jigsaw or drill (drill is better because you can control it's depth easier..so you don't hit any pipes!) to take the entire wall out (from the tile on down) if you want a nice even wall in the end. After taking the walls down, go to the Home Depot or Lowes and get some more drywall to put in it's place. Consider putting in supports behind this new wall, so it doesn't crash inward when someone leans against it. Good Luck!
