New shower pan creaking

My contractors just rebuilt my shower with a Swanstone resin type shower pan and tile walls, but the shower pans creaks when we step on it. Any suggestion on how I may cure this? Thanks.

papertiger,

If you will notice the attached link or the instructions for your Sawnstone shower base, under installation tips, it states "It is suggested that the shower floor be nested in a "mortar type bed material" (Quickrete) Improper installation will void the warranty."

http://www.theswancorp.com/LIBRARY/PDFS/FORM509.PDF

It is always suggested, not always recommended, to install a mortar mix or joint compound under the shower or tubs, regardless of type of material to avoid exactly what you are experiencing. I am surprised that your contractors plumber wouldn't know this, if he had the experience or learned how to do it the right way. I always do this, I know that without it, the bottoms could crack and drains could leak from the movement.

The key is, you do not want any movement on the bottom. You have chosen a good shower base so to ensure that the warranty will be valid for years to come, you will have to remove what you have and reinstall. This should all be done on his own time - No charges back to you.

***NOTE: SPRAYED-IN-PLACE POLYEURATHANE FOAM IS NOT A SUBSITUTE FOR MORTAR OR JOINT COMPOUND*** This is not recommended nor suggested - This does not work regardless of who you talk to.

Hope this helps!
