Question

I just torn out an old tub, which a big funky fiberglass tub, kind of a sunken type that was set up above ground and getting ready to build the two side walls up for a three wall alcove. I'm looking to buy a 60" tub. The two exisiting front studs, which I believe are supporting, are 60 5/8" apart. Should I build my two sides walls that extend to the back wall 60 5/8" apart, or must I stick with the 60" measurement for a proper fit for the tub. Does the alcove have to be a perfect fit for the tub?
Thanks

Go buy the tub you want, THEN build to fit it. That extra 5/8" between the end walls might prove to be a real time saver when installing the new tub, and will be very easy to get rid of if you find out you don't need it.

There's a bit of leeway in that 60" measurement. You can of course built the walls exactly 60" apart, in which case the tub will be a tight fit. But since you're going to put a half-inch wall on both sides, you can afford to have the opening a little more than 60".

Only one other thing to consider. If you're going to put a sliding tub door on, be aware that many of them have a maximum width of 59", which usually isn't a problem if you're going to put up wall tile. Just don't make that opening a full 61". I'd think 60 and 1/8 is enough.

Bottom line, I agree with lefty -- your 60 5/8 is just fine -- stick with it front to back. Center the tub in the opening, with 5/16" on either side. The cement board or greenboard you put up will bridge that gap.
