Question concrete backer board before tile in a bathroom window?

i have a window in the shower that i am going to line with cement bakcer board. is there a particular method to creating the seams where the window sill, etc. will meet the wall cement boards?

Not that Iím a tile contractor, but I have taken the horizontal piece (sill) and butted it into the vertical (wall) piece of backer board. Itís a smoother area for the wall tile to be placed on (rather the rough edge of the cut backer board). Any thoughts?

This is covered in a video

Check out the Fine Homebuilding book and videos on setting tile, the author is Byrne. He shows you how to waterproof the sill of a shower window. My local library has both book and videos, and they're the best I've come across for tiling.
