Painting the bathroom

I'm going to paint my bathroom. I've heard that semi gloss the ideal sheen. Why is semi gloss used, and can I also use something like eggshell which is not so shiny. Also, is latex or oil base better bathroom paint. I'm painting over perviously painted drywall.

Semi-gloss is good for bathrooms because of the inherent moisture levels.
S-G is much easier to wash off than flat paints, probably due to the smoother surface. If you can get the eggshell color in a s-g, go for it.
I've used s-g latex for 30 years without any problems.
