101 Preparing for granite counter tops needed

I would like to have a granite counter top installed.
I have some 101 questions:
- does the granite go directly on top of the cabinets or do I need to put plywood in between?
- how far can granite span without support? I have a dishwasher in between the last cabinet and the wall. The dishwasher isn't in a cabinet and "faces" the wall directly without any spacer in between.

Counter top

You will need a cleat on the wall to support the end of the counter top. Make sure the dishwasher will fit with the cleat installed.

How big should the cleat be? Do I get away with 3/4" on the side wall?

If there is room, I'd go with a 2x4 attached to studs for support of granite top. Granite goes on top the cabinets.

Counter top

Yes. 1x4, well secured to studs.

So there is no need for a plywood cover over the cabinets to support the granite?

The single biggest requirement is, EVERYTHING must be level. The granite guys usually take care of the rest.

Talk to the granite guys and find out what they need. I put a 1X ledger against the wall and another 1X piece that spanned the DW opening in the front. I also beefed up the sink cabinet in the front at their request.
The guys that did my countertops were very particular about getting it level. If it isn't perfectly level the seams won't match. I thought I did a pretty good job leveling the cabinets but I had one spot in a corner that they spent a half hour tweaking to get it perfect.
