Getting ready to tile my shower.

I'm going to tile it horizontal about 1/3 way up, run a colored strip, then run diagonal for 1/3 of the way, another strip, then back to horizontal. I'm deliberating on starting at the top though. Is that stupid?

Looks like you have a kerdi shower there. You need to use an unmodified thinset over kerdi. If you start from the top, the tiles will be sliding down the walls unless you figure out a way to hold them up. Tile will not stay where you put it when using thinset on a vertical surface. It will slide down the wall. This is why you work from the bottom up. Once you get your first row set, use spacers, shims, wedges as necessary to space the tile as you work your way up the wall. They do make non sag thinsets so that the tile wont slide down the wall, but you cant use them with kerdi.
