Question Cabinets attached to ceiling over island/range

Just purchased a house and want to remove hanging cabinets/vent hood that are attached to the ceiling over an island with a slide-in range.
What type of venting could be used for range; would a flush ceiling fan work for eight foot ceiling? Wanting to visually open up the area; when setting at the island the cabinets obstruct view into kitchen area.
Appreciate your help.
Thanks,
Eva

Without vent over island range, you will need to go with a downdraft range, such as Jenn Aire.

I had the same dilemma. We were tired of cabinets that blocked an otherwise open floor plan. We removed the cabinets and hood and searched around for a minimaly intrusive vent hood. We eventually opted for a downdraft.

If you go the downdraft route there are a few things you should be aware of up front. They are not as efficient as a range hood. They can be noisy - we solved that by mounting the blower in the basement. You will need a dedicated electrical circuit although if you have a range hood now, that circuit will probably serve but relocating it might be tough. If you have a granite countertop you will have to get the range opening resized to accomodate the downdraft. That can be expensive.

Island Range Venting

Thank you for the information! Was hoping to just put a vent fan in the ceiling but doesn't sound like that is acceptable any more?
Appreciate your time.
