how to prepare sheetrock for wall tile?

We are replacing our backsplash in our kitchen. We opted to remove the tiles only, instead of removing the tile and drywall and putting up new greenboard. That said, the tile came off relatively well, with some tile pulling of the top layer on the sheetrock, thereby exposing the brown paper. There are 3-4 area of exposed gypsom (less than 1 inch each). How should we now ready the drywall for the tile? And, what adhesive is best for hanging slate tile?

Since it's a kitchen backsplash, you don't actually need to do any prep to the dry wall except make sure any of the old stuff that is a hump or bump is removed, which it sounds like you've done. Thin set is the adhesive I'd recommend in this application. It will fill in the bad spots and sticks doggedly to dry wall. You'll tear up the wall getting it off after it sets up.
