Removing a 4" granite backsplash
#1

HELP! I have one of those little 4" granite mini-backsplash things in my kitchen. It is separate from the granite counter top. How do get the thing down in one piece without completely massacring the wall behind it? (I need to remove it to install a real backsplash of 1"x1" stainless steel tiles.)
Thanks!!!

You probably don't. If it was put up with any kind of decent adhesive, it'll come off unwillingly and take part of the wall with it. To minimize the damage, cut along the top of it so the tearing paper on the sheet rock stops at the line you've cut. You can patch the wall after it's all off or just fill in the rough spots with thin set as you go while installing the new material.

So, I decided to get handy and creative... I took a spackle knife and a hammer to a small area of the 4" backsplash and began to pry it away, close to the granite. There is minimal damage to the sheet rock! It is going to take me a day or two, but I think I can remove it without taking large chunks out of the wall. Too bad I have noise restrictions in my apartment, otherwise the entire thing would already be off!
