Recessed Tile Shelf

I have to say the advice here is excellent. So I thought I'd ask another question.

I am planning on re-tiling the bathroom shower as well. The wife wants to have a "recessed shelf" (for lack of a better word) in the wall to store shampoo and stuff. Any ideas on how I go about doing this?

I guess I would have to add some support between the studs for the top and bottom, but what about the back? Any tips?

Thanks!

Build the recess just like you would a wall in a room. Frame the sides, top and bottom. You will want to stick a moisture barrier behind all this before you make it final, and I usually glue a pieces of durock in the back and around the sides for a tile backer. The only thing different, is the bottom should be the last piece installed. Use door shims turned backwards, cut off to just short of the width, glue them down, then install the bottom durock with thinset. This will give you a little slope so water won't sit if splashed in it.
