backerboard use in tile shower underlayment

I am fixing to pour my slope and was wondering after I install the pan liner membrane can I use cement backerboard instead of mortar on top of that. Everything I've read says to use Mortar but I was wondering if backboard would work as well.

Welcome to the forums! Backer board won't "melt" and make a smooth floor as will mortar. The backer has sharp edges and can cut the liner. So I would go with the mortar.

That makes sense. I figured there had to be a reason for it! Thanks for the reply!
