Tile Over Laminate Countertop - Overhang Help

Hello everyone,

We are thinking of putting tile on our countertop, like on this site:

We have a breakfast bar that has 11 inches of overhang. How do we determine if the counter will be strong enough to support the additional weight? The laminate appears to be one solid piece over the entire surface.

Thanks for your help and have a great weekend,

Ryan: Welcome to the forums! Doing what you see is definitely possible, but a real lot of work. I have found it much easier to just remove all the countertop, start fresh with pressure treated plywood, concrete backer underlayment and proceed with the tile. You can be assured of a smooth surface without having to float out the countertop. Remember, the back of the countertop has a curved backsplash, too, which you will have to contend with.
