Laundry Shute

I am currently remodeling the bathroom (down to the studs) in a home I just purchased and it had a sheet metal laundry shute. The home is a bungalow with one bathroom on the main level and the shute drops to the basement. I am thinking of putting an addition on and adding a bathroom directly above the current bathroom. Is it possible to have a multi door laundry shute on two floors? Is it against code? Should there be two separate shutes or none at all? Thoughts?

Jay: welcome to the forums! Technically a laundry chute will violate code as it allows an air infiltration point between floors. Against code as it will allow a fire to spread too fast from floor to floor. It should be removed and sealed up. However, contact your local building people. They may have restrictions or exceptions not mentioned in general building and electrical codes.
