Shower handle too tight

I got a new shower/faucet last year during the bathroom renovation. For the first few days, the little thing you lift to turn the shower on was nice and soft. But after a few days, it has become much harder to lift. It is not a problem for me but my 6 year old needs help and my wife wants it to work the way it is expected to. She has seen it lifting easily at hotels and other places and wants it to work like that at home.

Also, when you turn of the shower, the thing used to drop back automatically. But it does not do that anymore. I think that is related too.

I think it has to do with the water pressure but I am not sure where to look.
Thanks in advance for any pointers.

Sounds to me like a defect/premature failure of the faucet. I'd contact the manufacturer. Some will just send you the parts to fix it at no cost to you. I don't know if that is a part that can be changed without changing the whole faucet (ouch!!!).
