Question tile on tile???

We have fifties era bathroom tile, .5 to .75 inch, black white checker. Wife wants new, so I try to chisele tile off, not happening. So I stop, my brother Mr. Demolition tells me to go at it with a sledge! I have basement, don't like idea of beating floor. These were put down in a cement base, tiles are quite firmly in place. My question can I retile on top of these old tiles, using 5x5 tile? Thank you.

It is possible to lay new tile over old tile. You will need to roughen the surface of the old tile, first, by scratching or sanding. Next, fill in any missing tiles or chips with mortar and let dry. When you lay the new tiles, they should not align with the old grout joints, but lay across those old grout joints. Usually, you start with a line in the center of the room, so, just be sure to offset your new row over the old row. Good luck! Connie
