Floor finish with Pregnant wife
Redoing our wood kitchen floor. It's bare wood right now. I'd like to stain it, then apply wax over top of that.
My wife is pregnant.
Does anyone know of safe floor stains and waxes that can be used?
The kitchen is sealed off with plastic, so there's a little protection, but I want to keep the air free of harmful agents.

You didn't say whay type floor you had, whether it was laminate or prefinished hardwood, or previously finished wood. You also didn't say if she was doing the work, or you were. Being pregnant isn't a good condition to be doing such work. Finishing wood, floors entails sanding them down, applying stain, and several coats of polyurethane finish. In all fairness, she should not be around the fumes at all.

The floor is real wood (not sure of the species though) - 70 years old never finished, but under paper and nasty linoleum. It's been sanded bare. She's not doing any of the work, but I want to have no fumes in the house, or little enough that I can suck out through the vent and a fan in the window.
I'd like to use wax on the floor and have heard about environmentally safe waxes, but don't know if they're people safe - was wondering if anyone did?

I can't think of a product that would do a good job and would be one I would use with a pregnant wife in the house. I would see if you can get her out of the house for a couple days.

we used OSMO hardwax oil to stain and finish our oak floor of the entire house. it was 7 years ago and my daughter was 2 months old at that time. it's not as hard as urethane products (if you have large animals) but it's vegetable oil based and are commonly use on toys. it smells like restaurant for a couple of days. we ended up moved out anyway due to the sanding dust but moved back as soon as the finish dried.

I ended up using a regular floor stain, but having my wife out of the house for a few days.
I did make my own floor wax - which was much easier than I thought it would be - and worked out better than I thought it would. Only four ingridients: almond oil, carnuba and bees wax,and vodka. It's really cheap too. I would recommend doing a few test batches to get your mix correct - and I would lean towards a harder wax w/ more carnuba in the mix - do a search for homemade floor wax - you'll find 2 or 3 sites, but the recipe is the same on all of them.
