Countertop Thickness for Formica

I have a 9' back back bar that I will put formica on. For the countertop, I will particle board, but I am not sure how thick I should make it (ie, 1 sheet to 3/4")? Is there a standard here and am I on the right track with using particle board?

Use industrial grade 3/4" particle board, build up the edges to 1 1/2. A dealer that specializes in Formica or similar will carry 25" material. Particle board is very stable, in the long run, which is why is used in countertops. Or you could buy premade post formed tops from big box, cheap, but quick.

The extra cost might not be much compared to the extra work to just buy premade countertops - wife put a bunch into her office a couple years ago and it cost a lot less than I thought it would (we installed ourselves).
