toilet problems

One of our toilets will get a yellowish-brown colored film around the base of the toilet and typically has a sewer gas smell.

Is this simply a wax ring problem, or could it be more serious?

As you probably guessed it is hard to tell until you take the toilet up and see. It is positive that you need a new wax ring. What you cannot tell is if the floor is rotted or the flange is loose or if maybe the toilet is just loose on the flange. The only thing to do is to buy the ring and take the toilet up and see what you find. Hopefully you only need the wax ring and some careful tightening of the flange bolts when you reinstall. The toilet needs to sit tightly on the floor with no movement. Some people put caulk around the toilet but then you never see the thing you see now until the floor is rotted to the point of falling through.

Men/boys with bad aim can be a problem, also. But I agree with the above. Take the toilet off, clean things up with some bleach, new wax ring, new shutoff valve(1/4 turn ball type), new supply tube(stainless braided), and new guts if the toilet is old. What you see when you get it off may answer a lot of questions.
