Bath tile grout, unsanded

I have replaced approx. a dozen wall tiles, and took a carbide rake and cleaned all the other grout lines. In doing such I have removed approx. 1/4 of the grout. My question is this.

Can I trowel in NEW grout on top of the areas I have cleaned and removed approx. 1/4 of the original grout depth?

Thank you for hearing me out.

Hi Dale

General rule, you need to remove approx 2/3 the depth of the joint, so no you need to remove more of the grout.

The more of the old grout you get out - the better adhesion you will get from the new grout. Keep in mind you won't have a color match from other sections of the tilework.... close maybe, but not perfect.

This is a large tub area and the tiles I have replaced are the horizonal tiles. I have raked the entire horizonal area so color match won't be a problem.

I will rake deeper though.

Thank You,

Dale
