Question kitchen tile job

Want to tile the kitchen floor but have discovered particleboard under the existing vinyl. I intended to use 1/4inch hardiboard as the base but this product should be mud set, based on the manufacturer's instructions. I'm concerned about putting the mud over the particle board. Should I leave the vinyl down as a moisture barrier?

Everything needs to be ripped out including the particle board. You need a sturdy subfloor consisting of at LEAST 5/8" ext. grade plywood then your hardibacker.

You need to find out your joists sizes and spacing along with the unsupported span.
