One piece shower pan installation questions

I am installing a one piece premade shower floor. The manufacturer recommends setting it in a 1" mortar bed.

Two questions:

What type of mortar should I use?

Can I apply the mortar directly to plywood?

This is all done AFTER you have had the base in the hole to fit the plumbing. Take it back out and.....

Buy an 80 pound bag of "Sandmix" or "Mortar Mix" to use for the mortar. Place some plastic film or roofing paper on the plywood first, mix the mud, plop it in place and press the shower base into the mud to seat it. Don't step into the base after it is placed and stay out for a full twenty-four hours or more.
