Cement bd to green bd transition

I changed out my tub which is a couple inches wider than my old one so it now is right at the stud. Normally the shower tile would extend a couple inches out from the shower/tub area. Now that the stud is AT the edge of the tub I'm stumped. Can I just use the green board for that 2-3 inches of tile area that is to extend from the tub/shower or do I need to build in a new stud so I can put the seam of green board to cement board on it? Does this make any sense?

No!

But I don't think I would worry about it in your case. Those seams are usually far enough away from the "pounding-water-source" that once covered with tile they live a long time.

That's what I thought!

On both counts. Sometimes it pays to sit back and just let (ye old brain cells) approach it differently. This project has been less fun than I anticipated, but I am hoping this gets me back on track! Thanks!
