New flooring will create step up to bathroom

Hi,
Newbie here with a bit of an issue I'm looking for some help with.

I've got a bathroom reno I'm going to start soon and here's where I'm at...

I've pulled up a bit of what's there now...

5/8" Ply Subfloor on 16 center joists
1/4" Ply
1/16" Vinyl
3/8" Carpet Tile NOT OUR INSTALL!

We want to install 12x12 marble flooring with "Suntouch Warmwire" beneath.

I've read many websites, consulted with many people at Home Depot/Lowes, etc. and spoken with people from Custom Building Products and Suntouch for advice...many different and contrary stories.

Right now it looks like I need to do the following...

Rip out to Subfloor
Layer of Mortar
1/4" Cement Underlayment
Paint with Self Levelling cement primer
Put down Heating wire
1/2" Self levelling cement
Mortar
Marble Tile

The total height of these layers runs around 1" higher than the current bathroom floor...that seems to me to be quite a transition from the hallway...is there any way I can cut down on the height at all?? Is this going to be strong enough??

Are there any products that can help me make things a little thinner, and still get the job done?

Thanks for any help.
John

Hi!

Since you are going with a marble floor, your subfloor needs to be quite stiff, AT LEAST 1 1/4" thick plywood, then SLC primer, heat wire/mat, SLC, then underlayment and tile.

We are talking about 1.5 -1.75" thickness here.

You can use Ditra underlayment, which is 1/8" thickness instead of CBU.

You may want to look into a porcelain or ceramic tile which does not need as a thick subfloor as a natural stone.
