replacing shower floor tile
I have had a few contractors estimate remodeling my shower stall. One says the entire shower floor has to come out, pan and all. Another says he can just remove the old tile and put in new tile. (the third says he wants to put in a cultured marble shower base). Is it reasonable to only replace the tile, leaving the old pan and deck mud (or whatever is in the pan)? Thanks. Don't want a leaky shower floor...

I would take it all out. You will probably damage the mud bed when removing the tile anyways.
Materials for a mud pan are cheap, just takes a bit of practice creating it.
For when the time arrives, your mud bed will consist of three parts:
Preslope mud bed
Pan liner
Final preslope.
