Dishwasher Air Gap

Hey everyone I need some info.
I just installed a new kitchen sink. The sink only has one drain so that is of course were I put the garbage disposal. I bought a air gap and intalled it. When the dishwasher drained water shot out of the air gap and did not seem to drain into the disposal.
I tried hooking the dishwasher direct to the disposal but then the dishwasher would not drain all the way ( water was still laying in it).
Is there something else that needs to be done for the dishwasher to drain through the disposal and not out the air gap?
Thanks

If there never was a DW connected to the disposal before, there is a plastic plug at the end of the DW connection on the disposal(for non-DW installations). That needs to get knocked out to allow water flow from the DW. Tap it into the disposal with a screwdriver or similar. But be sure to retrieve the plug from the disposal, after turning off the power.
