Flooring over flooring

Our kitchen has OLD linnolium flooring in the kitchen and we want to put laminate wood flooring throughout the kitchen and living room area. Becuase it is old parts were coming up on their own but other parts seem stuck down for good. There is a small amount of level difference but I don't want to put a new layer of plywood down becuase then we would have a weird step up in the middle of the open floor plan. Any ideas? Will it show if I put the wood over this flooring? Thanks!

If existing flooring is flat, you can follow manufacter's instructions for floating floor. Subfloor needs to be clean of debris and flat. There should be no high or low spots. If so, then corrections need to be taken. Grind high spots and fill lower spots with self-leveling compound.

If you provide more specifics re: subfloor then more experts can respond.

flooring

I'm more of a purist, but I think you need to somehow get the old floor out. It will give you a cleaner look, more level surface, etc. Then you won't get into height differences that can affect molding, thresholds, etc.
